Communities in Schools

Our mission

Communities In Schools of Central Texas surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

The founding principle of Communities In Schools is to establish one-on-one relationships with individual students in order to support them beyond obstacles to success in school.

Communities In Schools staff connect personally with students who have been referred by teachers, administrators, or family to improve student achievement. They create a service plan based on each child’s needs and then make that plan happen. They may provide individual counseling or support groups, basic life skills, tutoring, mentoring, or enrichment opportunities — whatever it takes to help the child succeed. The goal of all these services is to engage students in learning and succeeding in school.

The Communities In Schools program at Perez Elementary has two full time staff members, Program Manager Amara Nitibhon, LMSW, and Caseworker MariCarmen Gonzalez. They also bring in additional service providers for mentoring, academic support, and educational enrichment.
